So I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner. We need a fun debate. And that fun debate has been inspired by Panda's newest obsession: Deathnote. But this isn't about your standing on Deathnote -- no, no. It's your standing on all Anime. Sort of.
Who do you think, out of everything you've ever watched, is the best hero of Anime? State the name, the anime, and your reason why. We'll see who comes out on top!
The standard rules of debate apply, my awesome members. (I'll state my hero after the first post)

I debated with myself for a while between Gene from Outlaw Star and Vash the Stampede from Trigun. I finally settled on Vash.
He embodies everything a hero needs to be. Fallible, but still larger than life with an ultimate goal of only helping people.

As lame as it's going to be to have to copy the last poster, I'm going to have to give the award to Vash from Trigun. I'm only 12 episodes into this 26 episode series, so about halfway, and it's obvious that Vash is what a hero should be.
He's a bit naive, but that makes him loveable. His failed ability and deceit and courtship make him relate-able. He has reasons why, but he's committed to only using force when it's necessary and never taking a life, and that's commendable. He's also so skilled that he has the power to protect people from themselves and others. He's confident and strong when he needs to be, and always looks out for other people first. If hero's the question, Vash is the answer.

Death note took a drastic plot twist into the ground after about ten episodes, BUT BUT BUT before light turned into a amnesia stricken pussy, he was probably my favorite hero. He wasn't perfect but he was incredibly down to earth. He was witty, had a dark sense of justice, and wasn't afraid to kill people that got in his way. Mass murder to achieve peace FOR THE WIN!
That guy who's name escapes me from Mushi-shi was pretty cool too. He just wanders around being a badass nice guy

I will most definitely come up with a (formal) response when/if I survive work today. But the juice of what I've been wanting to say for a while now is that you're all wrong Dx The man who deserves the golden medal of heroism isn't Vash, or anybody from DN (I'm so biased against this show >0<).
Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass deserves everyone's particular attention in this debate, because to be quite frank, it's not necessarily the personality that makes the hero, but the actions! Forcing everyone to hate him so he can save the world? Hell yah! If you're looking for simplistics, you may as well just nominate Kouichi from Linebarrels of Iron. (he goes on a psycho power trip after realizing power through a nifty state of the art mecha ...but eventually he gets his shit together an tries his best).
Anyway, my point is simple. Lelouch, despite being an overbearing douche bag, without the usual rash "let's save this person just 'cause, then that one, then that one...then THAT ONE!" mentality still kills his entire family for sake of freedom O.o Give him a little room for vengeance, and he finds himself a conscience.
